Humor in Irish Advertising

During my time in Ireland, I noticed that many of the ads focused on humor and making the consumer enjoy the commercials and the product. In the US, we have the same desire, except American ads do not use the same humor. American ads tend to be loud and get the message of to buy the company's product over one of their competitors. Ireland ad’s are very similar but they like to interject there sense of different types of humor. The first humorous commercial I included was a Carlsberg commercial called "The Crate Escape" which is following the basic guidelines of the movie, "The Great Escape". In the detail section of the video, it is explained as- "It is set in a remote health spa where a group of young guys reluctantly join their girlfriends' at a luxury spa weekend. The men's presence does not seem welcome by the Spa staff as they experience extreme treatments. Resolving to do something about this, our hero leads the way, and joins forces with the other guys to outwit the spa attendants. The twist on the tale, instead of trying to escape from the spa, they were smuggling a crate of Carlsberg beer in.

In the next commercial that was supposedly banned from the US but shown in Ireland is a commercial about how important using condoms are. It shows a father (I interpreted) with his child at the supermarket. The child is screaming and throwing a temper tantrum over a candy that he wants. At the end, It advises you to wear condoms and to prevent this from happening. I thought it was very humorous and a realistic way of encouraging couples (who are not ready for kids) to use condoms.

The last commercial included is another Carlsberg commercial that shows men pretending to be Irish as a way to pick up women. They say words in another language that the Americans, I believe, think is Gaelic or some other language. But realistically they are just saying random words like goat and milk.
