While in Ireland, I was able to briefly watch some of their television. I realized that a majority of their commercials were very blunt and to the point, especially their Public Service Announcement (PSA) commercials. One that really stuck with one was this commercial about protecting ones journey and that everyone has a journey in life so respect it with driving safely. The commercial is very explicit and shows a man getting hit by a car. There is blood all over the place and they show him dying. I was with about 10 of my fellow classmates when we saw this on TV and none of us could believe it. We all thought it was a commercial for Under Armour because we saw their logo on the lady's shirt. A commerical this graphic would never be allowed in the US.
Respect Everyone's Journey
Another thing I realized was that our US TV shows premiered there way after than in the US. I was flipping around and came across the Series Finale of Desperate Housewives which aired in the US about a month earlier. I was joking around with my classmates that I should have ruined it for everyone and spoiled the ending of the series. There were also commercials for the "new hit TV show" Revenge. This started last year in the US and it is just beginning in Ireland now. Their TV was very delayed.
Lastly, I kept my Netflix's account just in case I wanted to watch it and when I logged in while in Ireland, it re-customized all my TV shows. The shows I was watching were not offered there. They were replaced with Irish sitcoms and other shows. They had a terrrible movie selection consisted of movies like the Parent Trap or other that I never heard of.
I had no idea the difference in commercials and TV shows overseas in other countries.
